Heinz Berger Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG from Wuppertal in the Individual Production category and Munich-based RNA Digital Solutions GmbH in the Project Services category are the winners of this year’s ife Award. The jury of the ife board of trustees, made up of members from practice, consulting and science, honoured the innovations in the areas of machine conversion and digitized feeding technology with the coveted innovation prize for companies with a batch size of 1+.

Heinz Berger Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG entered the competition with an innovation that reduces the changeover times of its machines from ten hours to just 20 minutes. The Berger-based company, a specialist in the field of grinding and polishing technology for the manufacture of cutlery, hand tools, surgical workpieces and workpieces for the woodworking industry, presented a fully automated grinding cell including a robot-controlled, specifically designed workpiece feed system. Thanks to the shortened processes, the systems work highly efficiently even with small quantities. In addition, the sanding system was equipped with modern sensor technology that constantly provides analyses and information for production control, thus minimizing the risk of machine downtime
