The Wuppertal-based Berger Gruppe, based in Kohlfurth, manufactures state-of-the-art, robot-assisted grinding and polishing machines for processing cutlery and hand tools. The family-owned company has been internationally successful in this field for decades. Berger also sets standards in the field of robot applications. This makes the group, which is firmly rooted in the Bergisches Land region, a classic “hidden champion”, which may not necessarily mean anything to the average person who is not familiar with the subject, but which occupies a leading position in the industry worldwide.

“We are the only supplier for many applications,” explains Dr. Andreas Groß, Managing Director at Berger together with Marco Chiesura, who has been with the company for a quarter of a century. With its six brands, the Group stands for the highest quality when it comes to processing and finishing metal strips and workpieces. The company processes household and machine knives, cutlery, surgical instruments, tools, castings and forgings. The product range focuses on CNC-controlled processing machines and robot cells.

Awarded for innovation

In total, more than 800 robot applications have been implemented over the past 20 years. In 2018, the company received the Robotics Award for the most innovative robot-assisted solution in the field of industrial automation, beating 400 competitors across Europe. “A lot of development work goes into this area in particular,” says Marco Chiesura.

This is illustrated by a knife sharpening machine, which has to record the degree of curvature and thickness of the blades to be processed, among other things. This is done using a 3D scan, among other things. “Our aim is to achieve consistent quality,” explains Andreas Groß. An application for polishing pots is even more complex, with 33 robots working in parallel on an area the size of a handball field and producing a finished product every 8.5 seconds. “In this case, we had a development time of seven months,” reports Marco Chiesura. The premier class is the grinding of pliers, as these are very individually forged. A 3D measuring system with two cameras is also used here.

In view of the numerous innovations at Berger, the qualification of the 160 employees plays a decisive role. Promoting young talent is particularly important to the company. For Andreas Groß, who also teaches special machine construction at the University of Wuppertal, this remains a matter close to his heart. “We have 20 to 30 trainees a year, which results in many apprenticeships,” he reports. The company is also in regular contact with the junior university. Berger would also like to increase the proportion of female employees and offers internships for this purpose. “There are a lot of technically talented young women in our region who we want to encourage to take up engineering,” emphasizes Andreas Groß.

A positive view of the future

Berger has weathered the pandemic well. “We had a 25% drop in orders last year due to corona, which we were able to make up for with a comfortable order backlog from before corona,” explains Marco Chiesura. In 2021, the order books are well filled again. “The situation is very positive and we are optimistic about the future,” emphasizes the Managing Director.

Picture: Andreas Fischer WZ, July 2021, Eike Birkmeier The Berger Gruppe from Wuppertal is successful worldwide.
